Pre-professional Division

Ages 14 -18

Pre-Professional Division Focus

Mastery of classical ballet technique continues with daily ballet classes, additional specialty classes of pointe for ladies, men’s class, partnering, and Pilates.  Contemporary dance forms of Modern and Jazz round out the training to prepare the dancer for a professional career.  As the repertory becomes more diverse, strength, fluidity of movement, and a sensitivity to musicality are all emphasized. While each dancer progresses, they are encouraged to master their own individual movement expression. Additional master classes, specialty workshops, summer programs, and a busy performance schedule complete this distinctive program.

Dancers who choose to take part in PDT’s Performing Company have the enormous fortune of participating in a rigorous performing schedule throughout the year. These experiences provide dancers invaluable insight to what a professional performing career would look like. Performances include, A Philadelphia NutcrackerBreaking Ground, annual PDT Spring show, Philadelphia Youth Dance Fest, Delaware Dance Festival and Members of Regional Dance America attend annual Festival.

Dancers with dreads or other natural hair styles are asked to secure hair away from face, so that it is not distracting when turning. Dancers with darker skin tones are welcome to wear skin tone tights, the only requirement is that their shoe color must match their tights color.

Levels 4/5/6 are required to wear their level color Monday-Friday, unless they have jazz or modern when they may wear black. Saturdays they are to wear white. Click the below links for details of your level’s dress code.

Determining Levels

Placement in levels at Philadelphia Dance Theatre is based upon each child's individual development.  Each dancer will develop at their own physiological rate. Ballet is hard and it takes daily practice, discipline, and dedication.  Each dancer is evaluated by their abilities, what they can comprehend, and put into their bodies.  All new students must be evaluated in a class before placed in a level. Call or email the studio to schedule your first free trial / evaluation class.
